In his poem, If, Rudyard Kipling writes: “If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster/And treat those two impostors just the same…. you’ll be a man my son.”
Forst Gump philosophized: “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.”
The highs and lows can be exhausting if not met with the right attitude. I never expected to be diagnosed, let alone misdiagnosed with ALS in 2003. I had planned on being a doctor, worked hard and made sacrifices to do so. Yet, it all could have been lost in the blink of an eye. How do you deal with the trials and troubles of life? Our attitudes decide our day to day lives. If you want to be happy and enjoy life, then you need the right attitude. Today, let’s makeover our attitudes!
Refresh your perspective
Our brains are more powerful than we realize. When you talk to yourself negatively, it structures your brain in a way that perceives the world negatively. To fix this, catch your negative thoughts and reframe them into positive ones. Instead of saying, “I hate my job,” say, “my job has challenges. If I want, I can make it better.” Then, consider how to improve your situation.
Self-Care + Pause + Reboot
Too often, we are constantly on the go. Or, we are attached to devices. This is when you need to hit pause. Set time aside for you to relax and get what you need. If you don’t take time for yourself, you will burnout, which negatively affects your attitude. Allow yourself to reconnect with what grounds you and ensure that you are still doing what brings you joy and purpose.
Connect with loved ones and play
Being around those we care about gives off dopamine and sparks joy in us. Often, as adults, in serious careers, we forget to play. Science shows adults who can laugh at themselves and enjoy life live longer and not surprisingly have healthier lives. If you need to pick up a hobby, go for it. Want to know a secret? If you have kids, pick up their hobbies. That action will pay you back 100 times when they grow up and have memories of you taking part in what brought them joy.
Your attitude affects actions
Working on a more positive attitude will influence your daily actions. Your attitude affects action, not the other way around. The Psychological Theory of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) backs this up. The negative things you say in your mind are what is blocking you from success. Fix your thoughts and shape your attitude and everything else will be that much easier.
