Summer Fun With the Family
The sun is out, and we want to enjoy the beautiful summer ahead of us! It is still important to practice social distancing to help stop the spread of COVID-19. But that doesn’t mean stay in your house all day. Let’s look at some fun activities you can do with your family while you enjoy the beautiful weather we are (rightfully!) in store for.
Hiking
Even if you can’t get out of the city, most urban areas have beautiful walking paths that you can hike along with your family. Edmonton has over 168 km of walkways! If you can get out to a National or Provincial Park, you may even get to see some wildlife. Hiking is a terrific way to enjoy family time. If you haven’t hiked before, read this article for beginner hikers.
Get on the water
The beach may be a hard place to socially distance, but there are other ways to enjoy water. Kayaking, canoeing, stand up paddle boarding, and water bikes are fun ways to get on the water. If you don’t have the equipment, you can often rent it for a reasonable price from local canoe clubs and outdoor equipment stores. If you are hesitant about getting on the water, you can also find a guide who can help teach your family water safety and required skills. Always remember to wear a lifejacket when on the water and to stay safe. If you want something more relaxing, take the boat out, go fishing, or read. I bet your kids would love tubing as well! If you don’t have a boat, there are often marinas that have boat rentals for half and full days.
Picnic/BBQ
You can never go wrong with food. Head out to a public, open space and throw down a picnic blanket. Play frisbee and soak in the sun. Picnics are a perfect way to relax and enjoy the summer. For the gentleman in the room it’s also a great date idea.
The other option is a summer go to, the BBQ. Sit outside on your deck, fire up the grill and make some delicious food for the family. Grilling is truly an art and I encourage you to jump into the world of the Q. If you are new to BBQing, or don’t know the ins and outs, there are many experts online ready to help.
Yard games
If you have a yard or public greenspace, there are endless games you can play with the family. Bocce ball is always a hit. Nowadays there are a many different things you can do. Spikeball for example, will take over your lives and your kids will exercise without knowing it.
We are amid a Global Pandemic, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go outside with your loved ones and have fun. Whether it’s the above activities or golf, I implore you to get outside and enjoy the sun. If golf is not your thing, try its Millennial child, disc golf. It’s easy to pick up and cheap to play! Have a lovely summer my friends.
