Five Tips To Set Successful Resolutions

Happy New Year! Can you hardly believe it’s a new decade? With 2020 here, many of us have made resolutions we hope to reach this year. The problem is that when it comes to resolutions, we often make our list with the best of intentions, but then life gets busy and we forget about them. So, here are some tips on how to not only make good resolutions, but ways to help you be successful as well.

Be realistic

There is nothing wrong with dreaming big. However, when it comes to setting your resolutions this year, try to start small. This way, you will be more likely to reach your goals and will feel inspired to keep going. It is important to remember that many resolutions, especially when they involve lifestyle changes, will require time and effort. So, go easy on yourself.

Be specific

When setting your resolutions, it’s key to make sure that you are specific with your goals. For example, perhaps you want to purchase a new home. To encourage success, make sure to ask yourself some important questions: What is your budget? What does your ideal home look like? What are you willing to compromise on, and what are you unwilling to sacrifice? Setting specific resolutions makes it easier to visualize your end goal.

Write it down

Like most things, unless we write it down, we often forget. Therefore, resolutions are more likely to be achieved when you make them official with ink. Writing them down also allows for you to place a note on your fridge, mirror or at your desk so you are regularly reminded what you are striving towards. It is a good idea to consider a journal as well. This way you can write about your progress, what you need to work on and record your successes. Chances are, your resolutions may change, and journaling is a great way to keep track of what you want most.

Be accountable

It’s one thing to set specific goals and write them down. However, its equally important to check in with yourself to make sure you are on the right path. Plan to set aside some time every other week or once a month (depending on your goal) and re-visit your plan. This is also a good time to reassess your goals and change or redirect your energy if needed.

Celebrate and don’t be hard on yourself

Make sure to celebrate your achievements. Even if it is a small success, take a moment to reward yourself. It is also important that you aren’t too hard on yourself. There will be bumps along the way, but if you stay the course and get back on track, you will reach your goals.

Henry Ford said, ‘Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.’ A positive mindset and hard work will pay off.
